The beginning of the Mighty Mississippi
All great things have a small beginning and that is true of the Mighty Mississippi river too. Just south and west of Bemidji, MN there is the beautiful Itasca State Park. Established in 1891 to conserve its giant pines from logging, this state park is Minnesot's oldest park.
Just a short drive through the park and a short walk brings you to the headwaters of the river.
Along the path I am greeted first by the Headwaters Caretaker woman and I take the time to greet her and ask permission to visit her waters.
Finally I am greeted by the peaceful solitude of the Mississippi. It was early spring when I was there so I was bale to have the space to myself for a long time. I understand in the high season it can get quite crowded. I was happy to have the time for quiet reflection and peaceful reconnection with the river.
